Adam Lallana and Alexis Sanchez forced out of assist charts by surprise inclusion of defensive midfielder

The Premier League is beginning to take shape, and player statistics are becoming equally interesting as the season goes on.

The assist charts show largely exactly what one would expect. At the top is masterful attacking midfielder Kevin De Bruyne. The Belgian has 5 assists, showing how instrumental he has been for City once again this year.

The rest of the top 5 are made up by 4 players on 4 assists. Some are more surprising than others. Dimitri Payet, Philippe Coutinho and Yannick Bolasie are all outstanding attacking players who spend the majority of their time in their opposition’s halves creating chances. There are no surprises there.

But the fourth of the quartet is Chelsea defensive midfielder Nemanja Matic. Even Chelsea fans will be surprised to see the Serbian flying high in this particular category. His presence is a testament to Chelsea’s rapid counterattacking transitions which allow him to burst up the pitch in support of Diego Costa and Eden Hazard.
