Man Utd poised to swoop for top Jose Mourinho target in possible £75m+ deal

With the transfer deadline and Premier League season fast approaching, Man Utd are reportedly set to make a late move for Leicester City’s Harry Maguire.

As it stands, the Red Devils have added veteran goalkeeper Lee Grant, young defender Diogo Dalot and midfield ace Fred to the squad so far this summer.

Given that they finished 19 points adrift of rivals Man City in the Premier League title race last season and lost in the FA Cup final to Chelsea to end the campaign empty-handed, that is arguably not enough for Jose Mourinho to launch a genuine assault for major honours in the upcoming campaign.

Whether or not signing another defender is really needed is another debate, but Sky Sports claim that Man Utd are ready to launch a move for Maguire and they may have to splash out in excess of £75m in order to prise their top transfer target away from the King Power Stadium.

There’s no denying that the 25-year-old has continued to impress at club level while establishing himself as a key figure for England after their World Cup exploits in Russia earlier this summer.

However, it will raise debate as to whether he’s worth such a hefty price-tag, while given the presence of Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Victor Lindelof and Marcos Rojo in the current Man Utd squad, it has to be questioned if Mourinho really needs another centre-half.

Based on this report, it would appear as though it remains a priority for the Portuguese tactician, but it remains to be seen if their business can be concluded before Thursday’s deadline and Friday’s season opener against the Foxes.
