Manchester United CLEARED to sign €100million star from Real Madrid as Mourinho gets green light from key figure

Manchester United were reportedly cleared to splash out on the transfer of Cristiano Ronaldo while he was still at Real Madrid this summer.

In a shock development, it is claimed that Ed Woodward was willing to put aside €100million for the Red Devils to spend on re-signing their former hero.

However, the Daily Mirror have claimed Jose Mourinho did not think the move would be worthwhile and persuaded the club against spending so much money on such an old player.

This backfired somewhat, however, as United ended up not spending big money on an area that Mourinho DID want to strengthen – his defence.

The Portuguese had a few targets in mind – Toby Alderweireld, Jerome Boateng – but Woodward felt they were too old to spend what would’ve been £60m or more on them.

United have made a poor start to the season and could probably have done with either a top attacking signing like Ronaldo or any new centre-back, to be honest.

Fans will not be happy that a United legend was blocked from moving back to Old Trafford by Mourinho, who continues to struggle to win over both his players and his supporters at the Theatre of Dreams.
