Barcelona set for transfer scrap with PSG over €40m-rated ace eyed as key solution

Barcelona have reportedly been joined by Paris Saint-Germain in holding an interest in Lyon left-back Ferland Mendy.

It’s a problematic area in coach Ernesto Valverde’s squad as beyond Jordi Alba, the Catalan giants don’t have a great deal of quality depth at left-back.

With that in mind, it could be a priority this summer as they have seemingly addressed their issues in the more central roles following the January arrivals of Jeison Murillo on loan and Jean-Clair Todibo.

According to Mundo Deportivo though, their pursuit of Mendy could now be complicated by the fact that PSG are also said to be keen, while it’s suggested that a bid of around €40m could be enough to prise him away from their Ligue 1 rivals.

The 23-year-old has undoubtedly continued to impress so far this season, making 31 appearances for Lyon across all competitions.

Particularly for Barcelona who rely on their full-backs getting forward and offering width as well as doing their defensive work, the fact that Mendy has contributed three goals and three assists this year also suggests that he could be a good fit at the Nou Camp.

Time will tell if Barca can fend off PSG, as much will surely also hinge on whether or not the player himself wishes to stay in France, or take a potential opportunity to move to Barcelona and fight for a starting berth with Alba.

The Spaniard has shown so far this season that he has plenty left in the tank, but with Barcelona battling on multiple fronts year in and year out, it would certainly be a sensible move to bolster their options at left back moving forward.
