Tottenham have moved one step closer to the signing of Barcelona’s David Villa after a deal was agreed in principle with the player’s representatives according to The Mirror.

All that remains is for Spurs to agree with a transfer fee with Barcelona, where the Spanish giants are expected to demand somewhere in the region of £8.6 million.

Tottenham have been so far unwilling to match Barcelona’s asking price but it is not expected to prevent the deal from going ahead.

Barcelona are keen to get Villa off the wage bill and Spurs chairman Daniel Levy believes there to be room for negotiation in the price.

Villa currently receives a package in the region of £110,000 a week but is unlikely to find much first team action at the Nou Camp this season following the arrival of Brazilian wonderkid Neymar.

The signing will represent somewhat of a coup for Tottenham as the Villa was also heavily courted by the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Everton.

Spurs boss Andre Vilas-Boas has made bringing in attacking reinforcements one of his top priorities this summer and will hope to conclude a deal for Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke to spearhead the Tottenham attack.

Spurs are hopeful of signing the Belgian for around £20 million.
