Bundesliga side Hannover 96 are hoping to beat Newcastle United to the signature of former FC Twente defender Douglas, Sky Sports reports.

The Magpies have been linked with a move for the 25-year-old for some time now, but looked to have been beaten by Serie A side Lazio as reports recently suggested that he had agreed a deal to join the Rome based club.

However, those rumours were untrue, but Newcastle effectively ended their interest in him once Joe Kinnear had taken over as the club’s director of football.

Douglas is now a free agent after seeing out the end of his contract with the Eredivise club and is now free to talk to other interested parties with Hannover thought to be the frontrunners.

The German side made a respectable ninth place finish in the Bundesliga last term and are thought to be interested in Douglas after they failed in an attempt to bring John Djourou back to the club from Arsenal.

“We are looking to sign a defender and we are interested in Douglas,” Hannover chairman Martin Kind told BILD.

“Signing him would be very good business for our club.”

Douglas made over 150 appearances for Twente since joining in 2007.
