Villa frontman hails strike partner.Check in to Aston Villa vs Newcastle United
Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor has hailed his teammate Christian Benteke as the best goal getter in the Premier League, the Mirror reports.
The Birmingham born forward has hailed the Belgium international as a revelation following his surprise £7m switch from Genk last summer.
Benteke hit 23 goals in all competitions last season and was already the subject of some heavy transfer speculation during the transfer window, with the likes of Spurs, Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund all reported to be interested in taking him away from Villa Park.
However, manager Paul Lambert managed to convince him to put pen-to-paper on a new four year deal, much to the fans delight. And Agbonlahor believes that the 22-year-old will prove to be more than a one season wonder.
“Christian is world class – everyone sees that. This season he has been the best player in the league.
“I knew he wouldn’t have that so-called second season syndrome. As long as he gets the service he needs then he will score goals anywhere.”
Agbonlahor revealed that he has adapted his own game in order to get the best out of Benteke, as he now operates as a left sided forward as opposed to a central striker and he had done throughout the majority of his career.
“The position I am now playing in, it is good to score goals but just as important to get the assists.
“With a prolific scorer like Christian we are going to win more games than not.” Agbonlahor’s unselfish attitude has helped Villa but arguably dented his own England prospects. The star, who has three caps, was overlooked again by England for the recent internationals.
But he said: “I can’t really say anything at the moment because the England team is doing well.”
