Man United Step-Up Pursuit of £20m German International

Old Trafford side very keen on Borussia Dortmund defensive rock.

Check in to Brazil vs Germany

Man United are to step-up their interest in Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels with the Daily Star claiming incoming boss Louis van Gaal is very keen on the £20m rated centre-back.

The Premier League side are apparently keen to ascertain whether the German international would be interested in a move to Old Trafford before registering a bid, therefore avoiding the embarrassment of possible rejection.

Van Gaal will have to repair a back-line that has seen veterans Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic bid an emotional farewell and it makes good sense to target 25 year old Hummels, however the reported ‘last offer’ of £20m is likely to get short shrift from the Westfalenstadion side.

Jurgen Klopp would be loathed to lose another of his star performers, with Robert Lewandowski having followed Mario Gotze to domestic rivals Bayern Munich, and frankly £20m just isn’t a tempting offer for a player of Hummels obvious quality.

Man United have apparently attempted to sign Hummels in each of the last three transfer windows but if £20m is their top offer then it’s no surprise that previous bids failed.

Should a move for Hummels fail then van Gaal will turn to Feyenoord youngster Stefan de Vrij and Arsenal back-up defender Thomas Vermaelen, both of whom would certainly cost less than Hummels but arguably don’t come near to matching the German for quality.
