By all accounts the 27 year old, upset by an average campaign at the Nou Camp under former boss Gerard Martino and various off field issues the most prominent of which being an ongoing tax evasion case that has muddied his reputation, had been considering his future at Barcelona and had discussed the possibility of a move to Arsenal with former Gunners skipper Fabregas.

This is not to suggest a move was ever plausible but was, according to this source at least, a possibility that had sprung into the Argentine’s mind.

The four time Balon d’Or winner has gone on to sign a lucrative new Barcelona contract and has been pleased with the appointment of new manager Luis Enrique and the signings of Ivan Rakitic and Luis Suarez.

Cesc Fabregas has of course left for pastures new, returning to the Premier League and joining west London side Chelsea, and one imagines that Barcelona are looking for a return to form after a rare trophy-less campaign in 2013/14.

Messi enjoyed a strong World Cup display, albeit perhaps did not warrant the Golden Ball award, helping Argentina to the World Cup final.
