Nou Camp side bring in French international.
Barcelona have officially completed the signing of experienced defender Jeremy Mathieu from Valencia.
The 30 year old French international has signed a four year contract with the Nou Camp side in a deal that has cost Luis Enrique €20m (£15.8m) and will help to strengthen the club’s rather threadbare defence.
Barcelona do not possess a great many central defensive options, frequently turning to the likes of Alex Song and Javier Mascherano to fill makeshift roles, and the arrival of Mathieu is all the more timely given the departure of veteran Carles Puyol.
Mathieu can play at left-back of a central defensive role and has been a consistent performer throughout his four season spell at the Mestalla.
Having won just two national team caps Mathieu will hope his high-profile move to the Catalan giants helps him secure a more prominent role in Didier Deschamps’ plans.
Mathieu becomes the fifth Barcelona signing of the summer following the captures of Marc-André ter Stegen, Ivan Rakitic, Claudio Bravo and Luis Suárez.
