Chelsea & Manchester United face new competition from Barcelona for £40m signing; defender learning Spanish

Chelsea are understood to be planning a fresh summer move for Everton centre-back John Stones, but face competition from Premier League rivals Manchester United and La Liga giants Barcelona.

According to The Sun, the Pensioners remain keen on signing Stones, who they see as the natural successor to ageing club legend John Terry.

While Everton held out for the defender during the summer, rejecting a series of Blues bids, the west London side remain confidence of signing the 21-year-old during the summer, particularly if Roman Abramovich delves into his pocket and makes a £40 million bid for the stopper.

However, Chelsea’s inability to sign the defender during the summer mean that one or two other sides threaten to nip in and nick the centre-back.

The tabloid note that United are keen on Stones, after failing to sign a centre-back during the summer, while the defender himself is understood to be taking Spanish lessons—encouragement indeed for another one of his major suitors, Barcelona!
