Liverpool chasing Brazilian defender – but is he BIG enough?

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez seems to be on the hunt for a new winter signing to bolster his defence as the Reds hot up their bid the Premier League and European Cup double. And this time, for once, Rafa is not looking at his native Spain to smuggle in players.

Instead, he is looking far into the mists of Brazil with a reported enquiry about Aislan, a 20-year old 6ft 4in defender who has already broken into the Sao Paulo first team and is rated highly in his native country.

Aislan’s agent, Paolino Oscar, admitted to the press that Liverpool had come knocking on the youngster’s doors in the summer but the trail then went all cold. He said: “They had revealed interest in the past one or two months, when the window was open. Now, I find that it was more difficult because everything is closed in Europe.

“It is in Sao Paulo’s hands and it is they who decide. If Aislan is told to leave, very well. If not, that is good also. I have respect for Sao Paulo and I do not do blackmail, therefore it is the club who must make the primary move.”

Although Aislan is not Spanish, should Liverpool indeed sign him, there would be a doubt or two thrown on Rafa and his policy of taking in relatively unknown or lowly-rated players.
