Ferguson wants to bring a new central midfielder to Old Trafford this summer.
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson will step up his attempts to bring a new central midfield player to Old Trafford at the end of this season, says the Guardian.
The Red Devils have identified three possible transfer targets this summer to fill the void that is due to be created when veteran England international Paul Scholes eventually decides to finally hang up his boots, which could even be as early as next month.
And on the Scot’s list of potential midfield recruits are believed to be Newcastle United’s Yohan Cabaye and the Benfica duo of Nemanja Matic and Nicolas Gaitan.
However, it is understood that Ferguson favours a move for the Lisbon giants’ Serbia international ahead of the other two, which may come as a slight surprise to supporters who recall his brief spell with Chelsea in the 2009-10 campaign, when the player made just two Premier League appearances for Carlo Ancelotti’s side.
But, with the 24-year-old likely to cost far less than either of the other two at around the £12m – £15m mark, coupled with his outstanding form in the Portuguese capital this campaign, Matic could actually be the smarter buy.
