Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez’s move to Napoli has been put on hold according to TuttoSport.

The German forward was expected to sign for the Serie A side in the coming days with terms of a deal thought to have been agreed.

But it now appears that Gomez’s move has been put on hold by incoming boss Rafael Benitez.

Benitez has been announced as the club’s new manager following the completion of his time as interim boss at Chelsea.

The Spaniard is reportedly keen to put his own mark on the team and has insisted the club look at alternative options before confirming the Gomez deal.

Benitez reportedly favours a move instead for Manchester City’s Edin Dzeko. Dzeko is known to be on the market this summer after becoming increasingly frustrated with his lack of first team opportunities at the Etihad Stadium.

Dzeko has repeatedly found himself behind the likes of Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero in the City pecking order and is ready to try his hand elsewhere.

Benitez reportedly rates Dzeko has a better option than Gomez and is keen to assess the club’s chances of bringing in the Bosnian forward.

Whichever player is signed will have big boots to fill as they are likely to be brought in to replace Uruguayan star Edinson Cavani.
