Arsenal could be nearing a move to sign Gonzalo Higuain from Real Madrid after holding talks with the striker and his father in Paris, according to the Daily Mirror.

Arsene Wenger has met personally with the Argentine to persuade him to choose a move to the Gunners over Juventus, who have also been linked strongly with a move this summer.

The 25-year-old has been somewhat unfortunate to find himself on the transfer list at the Bernabeu, which has seen a number of clubs show an interest in meeting their asking price of £22million.

Higuain has scored 122 goals in 266 games for the Spanish giants, and his finishing ability appeals strongly to Wenger, who is still looking for a player to truly replace Robin van Persie, after mixed seasons from Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski.

Arsenal are expected to make an opening offer of £20million to Real Madrid, after cooling their interest in other targets Stevan Jovetic and David Villa.

Jovetic’s asking price was raised by Fiorentina after a move looked close to completion, and Higuain now seems to be a cheaper option for the Gunners, who would also prefer him over the ageing Villa, who turns 32 later this year.
