Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has reportedly set his sights on Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso in a move that is sure to anger his former Bernabeu employers.

The Daily Telegraph claims that the Portuguese boss is interested in the experienced 31 year old midfielder, who has just a year to run on his current contract, has steadfastly refused to put pen to paper on a new deal leading to speculation that the World Cup winner could be open a Real Madrid exit.

Alonso is thought to be one of only a handful of Real Madrid players who enjoyed a good relationship with Mourinho in the manager’s final season at the La Liga club and there is talk that re-elected president Florentino Perez is keen to conduct something of a squad re-shuffle but it would perhaps be a surprise if the former Liverpool man was a player he would be looking to offload.

Mourinho may well be looking to bring in a commanding central midfield presence who can help gel with the abundance of creative talent he has at his disposal but clearly a move for Alonso would not be a long term move and would seemingly go against Roman Abramovich’s youthful transfer policy.

Then there is the small matter of Alonso returning to the Premier League to join a side other than Liverpool, a club the midfielder is thought to still have a strong affinity with.
