Southampton are close to completing the signing of Celtic midfielder Victor Wanyama according to The Guardian.

The Kenyan international will join the Saints in a deal thought to be worth somewhere in the region of £12.5 million.

The signing represents somewhat of a coup for the Saints, with a number of top clubs thought to have been interested in Wanyama.

He was strongly linked with a move to Manchester United and Arsenal although a move failed to materialise.

Wanyama is understood to have waited some time before agreeing a deal as he waited in anticipation of an approach from a bigger club.

But that has not been forthcoming and Wanyama has now decided to put pen to paper on a deal with the St. Mary’s club.

Celtic bought Wanyama for just £900,000 from Belgian side Beerschot just two years ago and his transfer fee on exiting Parkhead will set a new Scottish transfer record.

Celtic will not be hoping that the money puts them in a stronger position to turn down bids for the rest of their squad.

There has been strong interest from Norwich in goalkeeper Fraser Forster should John Ruddy leave for Chelsea while the Canaries are also understood to be keen on striker Gary Hooper.
