Jose Mourinho wants to sign a holding midfielder as he doubts that Mikel has the quality to play in that role.
Chelsea are ready to offer Bayern Munich £15 million for midfielder Luiz Gustavo, with Jose Mourinho keen to sign a quality holding midfielder for the coming season, the Daily Mirror reports.
Mourinho feels that John Obi Mikel doesn’t have the ability to play in that role and has made signing a holding midfielder a priority for the rest of the summer.
It looks as though he has targeted Gustavo as the man to fill that gap in the Blues midfielder.
Gustavo is unlikely to get much first team football at Bayern next season following the arrival of Thiago Alcantara and reports suggest that he is looking to move away from the Allianz Arena so that he be a part of Brazil’s squad for next summers World Cup.
Chelsea have also identified Nemanja Matic as a possible holding midfielder for next season.
Matic used to play for Chelsea but was a fringe player at the club and moved to Benfica in 2011 as part of the deal that brought David Luiz to Stamford Bridge.
The Blues now want Matic back but Benfica’s £25 million asking price is reportedly putting them off.
