Real Madrid full-back Fabio Coentrao is set for a £13 million move to Tottenham Hotspur, the Daily Star reports.

The Portuguese defender was set to be a part of Madrid’s deal to sign Gareth Bale but will now be totally separate to the Spanish clubs move for the Welshman, with Spurs paying £13 million out right.

Coentrao has been looking to move away from Real Madrid for most of the summer having struggled to establish himself at the Santiago Bernabeu.

He was also linked with a move to Chelsea and reports suggest he liked the idea of linking up with former Madrid manager Jose Mourinho.

However, the defender will now move to White Hart Lane, having been persuaded to join Spurs by the prospect of regular first team football and the chance to play for another Portuguese manager, Andre Villas-Boas.

The signing of Coentrao will ease Spurs current problems at the back with the Premier League season set to begin in just over a week.

Spurs sold Steven Caulker to Cardiff City for £8 million and Jan Vertonghen is set to miss the start of the season with an ankle ligament injury.
