Emirates Stadium side to make club record offer for French international.
Arsenal are set to launch a club record £40m bid for Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema according to the Metro.
The Gunners boss is keen to respond to very vocal criticism from Arsenal fans who have demanded Wenger spends big this summer and a move for the 25 year old French international would certainly go some way to strengthening the Emirates Stadium attack.
Wenger has all but given up his pursuit of Liverpool marksman Luis Suarez and will instead hope to lure Benzema away from the Bernabeu side he has represented for the past four years a move that Carlo Ancelotti may well look to head off given he has already seen Gonzalo Higuain leave for Napoli.
However if Real Madrid’s pursuit of Gareth Bale is successful, and the signs are that this could well be the case, then in order to accommodate the Welsh international and Cristiano Ronaldo the Italian may look to use one of the pair in a central striking role.
Olivier Giroud has started the season well, and impressed in pre-season action too, scoring two goals in the opening two competitive matches of the campaign, however Arsene Wenger can certainly do with beef up his attack not least because he appears to see both Lukas Podolski and Theo Walcott are predominantly wide attackers.
Benzema has had a mixed time of it since moving to the Spanish capital but has still scored at a healthy rate, netting 88 goals in 184 appearances for Los Merengues.
