Arsenal have reportedly reached a ‘preliminary agreement’ with Real Madrid to sign playmaker Mesut Ozil according to Spanish source Cadena Ser.

Arsene Wenger is yet to spend a single penny on new players this summer but could well end that drought with a big money move for the German international, who is said to be unhappy at the Bernabeu.

Ozil will reportedly cost €45m (£38m) and the 24 year old will be handed a contract worth €7m (£5.9m) a year after tax. Such a transfer will certainly appease the Arsenal faithful who were keen to see Wenger bring in established star signings to help bring an end to an eight year silverware drought.

Arsenal have thus far brought in French pair Yaya Sanogo and Mathieu Flamini on free transfer deals and certainly have the funds to make a big money offer for the Real Madrid who last week stormed off the pitch after being subbed against Granada and wasn’t selected in Carlo Ancelotti’s starting eleven for today’s win over Athletic Bilbao.

With Isco arriving earlier in the summer and Gareth Bale officially completing his move to Real Madrid it seems likely that Ozil would be playing a more limited role at the La Liga side and could therefore be tempted by a fresh challenge at Arsenal.

Ozil has made a total of 158 appearances for Real Madrid since moving to the Spanish giants from Werder Bremen back in August 2010, scoring 27 goals in the process.
