Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata may consider handing in a transfer request in order to seal a move to Arsenal, according to the Daily Mirror.

The Spanish playmaker is thought to be concerned about his role in the Chelsea side this season, with new manager Jose Mourinho seemingly not including him as part of his plans.

The 25-year-old has found himself on the bench for much of the start of the season, despite being a key player for the club over the last two seasons, scoring 32 goals and providing 59 assists in that time, and will want to be playing regularly to put himself in contention for a place in Spain’s World Cup squad next summer.

With fierce competition in the national side, Mata will be eager to impress, and may feel a move to Arsenal is the right one at this time, with the Gunners keen to bring in a marquee signing before the transfer deadline.

Mourinho has claimed Mata will be part of his plans, but his actions so far suggest otherwise, with his being limited to only one appearance so far this season while the club have spent big money on the likes of Andre Schurrle and Willian, who play in Mata’s position.

Chelsea will be keen not to sell to a rival, but a transfer request from the former Valencia man may force their hand.
