Juve may even swoop for Spaniard when the window reopens in January.
Serie A champions Juventus are set to make a move for Real Madrid midfield player Xabi Alonso, who is also wanted by former club Liverpool, according to reports on talkSPORT.co.uk.
The in-demand Spain international is currently in the middle of contract negotiations with the Liga giants as he recovers from a long-term foot injury that has so far prevented the 31-year-old from featuring for los Blancos this season.
Alonso’s present deal at the Santiago Bernabeu now only runs until June 2014, although as yet, the two parties have been unable to come to any sort of agreement about extending Alonso’s stay in the Spanish capital.
And as a result, the Merseyside giants have been put on alert after rumours began to circulate that Madrid did not want to offer Alonso, who turns 32 on Nov 25, a new contract to finish his career at the White House.
Alonso spent five hugely successful years at Anfield between 2004 and 2009 under previous head coach Rafa Benitez, before leaving the Reds for Madrid in August 2009 for a fee of £30 million.
However, Liverpool are now set to face stiff competition from the ‘Old Lady of Italian Football’ for their former star man’s signature, with Juve even pondering making a move for Alonso in January in order to steal a march on the Reds.
