Manchester United are planning a second attempt to bring Portuguese international left back Fabio Coentrao to the club from Real Madrid during the January transfer window, talkSPORT reports.

Manager David Moyes was convinced that he had a deal to sign the 25-year-old on transfer deadline day, only for the window to slam shut before the paperwork could be completed.

Madrid were also reluctant to let the player leave as they were unable to line up a suitable replacement for him.

Moyes has made it known he wants more competition for Patrice Evra’s left-back spot with Leighton Baines his top target.

However, the former Everton man does not believe that his old club will be any more willing to sell their prized asset this time around as they were in the summer and has targeted Coentrao instead.

Coentrao had insisted he has no regrets over the move to the Spanish capital failing but has remained on the fringes at Santiago Bernabeu and the Spanish side are willing to listen to offers.

Tottenham Hotspur were also credited with a heavy interest in the player this summer too, but instead decided to strengthen their midfield instead.
