Tottenham are ready to push on with efforts to sign Real Madrid wing-back Fabio Coentrao due to the fact that Belgian defender Jan Vertonghen is unhappy with filling the spot according to the Daily Mail.

Vertonghen has warned Andre Villas-Boas that he is not willing to fill the full-back berth on a long term basis and is currently only stepping into the breach due to the fact that Danny Rose is still sidelined with injury.

The former Ajax man has been fairly vocal on the topic, stating;

‘Tottenham pay my wages, so I have to accept it, but it doesn’t suit me, and the club know how much I want to play centre-half.

‘I think I have done enough to deserve a place there now, ideally for every game.’

Spurs boss Villas-Boas had hoped to bring in Portuguese international Coentrao as part of the deal that saw Gareth Bale move to the Spanish giants and Man United also failed with a late attempt to land the 25 year old.

Coentrao has started just four of Real Madrid’s 13 La Liga fixtures this season.
