Emirates Stadium side line-up fresh Bernabeu swoop.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has reportedly set his sights on Real Madrid pair Karim Benzema and Raphael Varane according to Punto Pelota.
Having successfully lured Mesut Ozil from the Bernabeu the North London club appear eager to repeat the trick though one wonders if Wenger will manage to land the French international pair.
Though there was a great deal of speculation over Benzema’s long term Real Madrid future the 25 year old has responded to criticism from a portion of the club’s fan-base with something of a return to form in recent weeks, the former Lyon man scoring four and providing another four assists in his last four appearances for the Spanish giants.
Wenger may see Benzema as the ideal man to strengthen an Arsenal attack that relies too heavily on Olivier Giroud, so much so that injuries to Lukas Podolski and Theo Walcott have led to Nicklas Bendtner making a return to the first team set-up.
Ancelotti has been linked with an interest in Liverpool forward Luis Suarez and if such a move were to come off then clearly there would be an increased chance of Wenger signing long term target Benzema.
Arsenal’s pursuit of young centre-back Varane is perhaps a little harder to comprehend given the excellent form shown by Wenger’s first choice central defenders Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny and with Thomas Vermaelen ready and waiting on the bench there seems little urgent need to bring in the talented French international defender though clearly a move for the 20 year old is very much par for the course in terms of the Emirates Stadium side’s youthful transfer policy.
