The Spanish giants apparently see the 25 year old Stamford Bridge star as a potential replacement for Argentine winger Angel Di Maria, who is being hotly tipped to complete a £20m move to Ligue 1 big spenders AS Monaco.
Mata has found his first team chances limited under Jose Mourinho with the Blues boss seeing both Eden Hazard and Oscar as being ahead of the former Valencia man in his creative midfield pecking order, with new signing Willian also seemingly giving the two time Chelsea Player of the Year a run for his money.
A move back to La Liga would probably tempt Mata though he would look for first team guarantees in order to help cement his place in Vicente del Bosque’s 2014 World Cup finals plans.
Di Maria’s place at Real Madrid has become threatened by the arrival of Gareth Bale and Isco last summer so Mata could well find himself swapping one bench for another if he were to pursue a move to the Bernabeu.
This source claims Chelsea are ready to accept as little as £16.5m for Mata, which in today’s inflated transfer market looks like an incredible bargain.
