The Old Trafford side hope that a £37m bid will tempt the Blues into selling the unsettled Spaniard, a move that the 25 year old may well be keen on as he seeks the regular first team football he needs in order to cement his place as a key member of Vicente del Bosque’s 2014 World Cup finals squad.

The Spaniard has started half of Chelsea’s Premier League fixtures and has been further frozen out of Jose Mourinho’s plan following his terse reaction to being subbed against Southampton.

Mourinho sees Eden Hazard, Oscar and even now Willian, ahead of Mata in his creative midfield pecking order and as such a big money offer for the former Valencia man may well be considered and the fact that Man United are so far off the Premier League title pace may actually offer David Moyes hope in the pursuit of the Stamford Bridge star.

Chelsea may not see Man United as a direct Premier League rival and as such could feel they can afford to sell Mata to the Old Trafford club.

Moyes could certainly do with some added creativity to his midfield and a move to bring in Mata would be a real statement of intent and could be a great help in their push for a top four finish, which must be seen by Man United’s owners as the very least they expect from the Scottish boss.

Mata scored 32 goals and provided a massive 55 assists in his first two seasons at Stamford Bridge, winning the club’s Player of the Year award in both campaigns, but is now seemingly a player Mourinho could be willing to cash in on.
