The Blues want to complete the signing of Mohamed Salah from FC Basel before officially signing off Mata’s departure, and the Spaniard is unhappy that his current employers have refused to sanction a medical at Old Trafford.

Mata has already agreed a four-and-a-half year deal worth £150,000-a-week with United but the player remained in London on Thursday due to Chelsea’s tough stance.

United ground-staff at Carrington had prepared a helipad for Mata’s expected arrival yesterday but continued to wait on Chelsea, who announced they had agreed a fee for Salah yesterday but admitted a medical and personal terms remained outstanding.

The Red Devils remain confident a deal will be completed with the next 48 hours for Mata, who is desperate to play more first team football ahead of next summer’s World Cup.
