Chelsea are thought to have set their sights on Real Madrid youngster Raphael Varane who could well become Jose Mourinho’s second signing of the summer with a move to bring in striker Diego Costa pretty much in the bag according to the Daily Star.

Blues boss Jose Mourinho signed Varane from Lens back in June 2011 and showed great faith in the French youngster but his chances under Carlo Ancelotti have been few and far between, leading to speculation that the 21 year old could leave the La Liga side.

Varane made 33 appearances in Mourinho’s final season in charge of Los Blancos but Ancelotti has handed the centre-back just 11 La Liga starts this season and now Mourinho appears to want to reunite with the defender.

There are question marks over David Luiz’s Chelsea future and John Terry is clearly in the latter stages of his career and as such a move for Varane would be a wise one to consider.

One wonders if Real Madrid would be ready to do business with their former boss though Varane may well feel that if he were to leave the Spanish capital then a move to join Mourinho at the west London club would have to be high up on his list of potential next destinations.
