The 26-year-old was agonisingly left out of the Spanish side’s Champions League final clash with cross-city neighbours Atletico last month, though he did manage to get off the bench late on and net the club’s third.

The situation is believed to have left the defender unhappy and Fabio Coentrao, despite being linked with a move away from the Bernabeu last season, could maintain his place on the left side of Carlo Ancelotti’s defence next season, despite Marcelo’s crucial goal.

Marcelo is out of contract in the Spanish capital next summer, and Real may decide to cash in on him now rather than risk losing him for nothing in 12 months, especially when he is so in demand both in England and Italy.

Liverpool have been in the market for a new left-back after Jose Enrique missed the season through injury, meaning youngster Jon Flanagan was forced to switch flanks.

However, Juve boss Antonio Conte is also a big fan and may look to set the wheels in motion over a big money deal.
