Real Madrid look set to switch their focus to Manchester City midfielder Fernandinho after being told to forget about signing Chelsea star Ramires, CaughtOffside understands.

The Spanish giants are known to be on the lookout for a new signing in defensive midfield this summer as German international Sami Khedira looks increasingly likely to leave the club after almost sealing an exit last year.

Real boss Carlo Ancelotti is known to be a fan of his former player Ramires, whom he signed and managed during his time in charge at Stamford Bridge between 2009 and 2011, but it was reported over the weekend that Jose Mourinho is unwilling to part company with the Brazil international, who has been a valuable member of the Blues first-team in recent times.

This could now mean City will have to face offers for their own Brazilian midfield enforcer Fernandinho, who only just joined the club from Shakhtar Donetsk last summer, and who has had an excellent first season in the Premier League, helping Manuel Pellegrini’s side claim the title.

It seems highly unlikely that the Premier League champions will be willing to sell the 29-year-old, though they may find they are forced to consider any reasonable offer as they face increased scrutiny from Uefa after breaching Financial Fair Play regulations in their recent work in the transfer market.

Despite Fernandinho’s fine displays alongside Yaya Toure in the heart of City’s midfield, with the player approaching his 30s, it could be a good financial move for the club to cash in on him while they can, particularly as recent reports also suggest they are close to signing another similar style of midfield player in the form of Porto star Fernando.

Fernando is expected to cost City around £15m, and if Real are able to offer more than that for Fernandinho, then it is thought that a deal could be possible for the classy midfield player to make the switch to the Bernabeu before next season.

It remains to be seen if Fernandinho will definitely be Madrid’s top target, as they are also supposedly working on a deal for Juventus’ Arturo Vidal, while AC Milan captain Riccardo Montolivo is also a favourite of manager Ancelotti.

It could be an uneasy summer for City in the transfer market, with star striker Sergio Aguero also reportedly attracting serious interest from Barcelona, while Toure has also hinted that he could look to leave the club.
