Earlier this week Real Madrid boss told reporters that the 21-year-old would be likely to leave during the summer transfer window as he looks for more regular first team football.

The news was welcomed by Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, who had been on the trail of the young hit man since the January window as he searched to boost his forward line.

However, no deal could be done and he now faces strong competition for the player from a host of top European clubs, including Wolfsburg, Juventus and Inter Milan.

Any chance of a deal was further complicated by Real, who also demanded a buy-back clause be inserted into the deal, too.

The Champions League winners are prepared to drop their asking price to £14m if a clause is inserted, but are demanding £10m on top of that if the buying club are not prepared to insert the buy-back option.
