Former Chelsea Star Believes Mesut Ozil Was Wrong To Join Arsenal

Germany legend questions Ozil move to Emirates Stadium and feels his compatriot should have stayed at Real Madrid.

Former Chelsea and Germany midfielder Michael Ballack says he would have liked to see Mesut Ozil stay at Real Madrid longer, and has questioned the player’s attitude in general.

In an interview with Spanish publication Marca, the ex-Blues midfielder spoke about a number of topics ahead of this summer’s World Cup, and Ozil was a player from the German national team that came under some criticism from the 37-year-old.

The Arsenal playmaker became one of the major talking points of last summer after completing a club-record £42.5m move from the Bernabeu to the Emirates Stadium, but many feel he has not gone on to enjoy the best of seasons in the Premier League.

Ballack admits that Ozil still needs time to adapt, but he also feels that the 25-year-old could have a better attitude and take more responsibility on the pitch than he does at the moment.

“This transfer of the Madrid Ozil to Arsenal… started fine, but then it has been hard to adapt, because English football is very complicated,” he said.

“Ozil is one of our best players, a large number ’10 ‘, but assumes a lot of responsibility in the team. He is a free player on the field, which has great influence on the game, with amazing quality, but sometimes his body language is not what it should be for a player of his class.”

The former captain of the German national team added that he would have liked to see Ozil continue playing at Madrid for longer, as his qualities are well suited to the games of Real forwards Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema.

“For me in particular, I would have liked to see more time fighting in Madrid,” he added. “It was a shame, because it sure Cristiano Ronaldo and Benzema would have loved to continue, because Ozil is a very generous player.”
