The news comes just one day after Mourinho spent £27m to swoop for Barcelona star Cesc Fabregas and he now wants a reunion with the German international, who he originally brought to Madrid back in 2010.
He wants the 27-year-old to form a strong defensive midfield partnership alongside Nemanja Matic, who himself only moved to Stamford Bridge during the January transfer window.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is also thought be keen on Khedira as he looks to add steel to his side. He is believed to be in the market for a natural defensive midfielder to take over from Mikel Arteta, whose powers Wenger feels are on the wane.
The Gunners boss has been handed £100m to transform the north Londoners into genuine title contenders after their challenge for top spot fell away last season.
Khedira is currently away with the German national side at the World Cup, and it is thought that he will make a final decision on his future after the tournament next month.
