The incoming Dutch manager is set for a transfer budget in the region of £150m and moves for Real Madrid box to box performer Khedira and Athletic Bilbao schemer Herrera are expected to cost £30m each.
24 year old Spaniard Herrera was linked with a move to Old Trafford in both Sir Alex Ferguson and David Moyes reigns and now that his Basque side have secured a Champions League berth, something Man United were of course unable to achieve, such a move seems even less likely.
Khedira missed most of last season through injury but has returned to fitness to form a prominent part of Joachim Low’s German World Cup squad and could see the tournament as a good shop window for his talents.
Van Gaal’s apparent wish to bring in multiple midfield signings will leave the likes of Michael Carrick, Tom Cleverley, Marouane Fellaini, Darren Fletcher and loaned out Brazilian Anderson concerned about the respective futures at the club.
