Gunners join chase for £30m man wanted by United.
Arsenal could be set to sensationally hijack Manchester United’s transfer plans as they reportedly join the chase for Borussia Dortmund star Mats Hummels, according to the Daily Mirror.
The German centre-back has long been linked with a move away from Dortmund after emerging as one of the best in the world in his position in recent years, and his fine displays for his country as they won the World Cup this summer have enhanced his reputation even further.
The 25-year-old has also been linked with Barcelona for much of the summer, though United have for some time looked like the favourites to get him.
However, United have also been linked with one of Arsenal’s central defensive options in Thomas Vermaelen, and it could be that Arsene Wenger will be prepared to sign Hummels as a replacement for the Belgian international if he does make the switch to Old Trafford.
Dortmund have insisted that Hummels is not for sale this summer, but it is thought that he could move for a fee of around £30m, which would put him up there with recent big-money purchases Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez as one of Arsenal’s most expensive signings of all time.
