Atletico Madrid right back Javier Manquillo has arrived in Liverpool ahead of his expected transfer to the Reds, report the Daily Mail, with the young Spaniard set to join up on a two-year loan deal, with the option for Liverpool to buy him at the end of the season.
Manquillo had reportedly been interesting numerous clubs from across Europe, but it looks as though it will be Liverpool who secure a deal for the highly rated youngster, who will arrive to provide competition for senior right back options Glen Johnson and Jon Flanagan.
The player is expected to complete a medical at the club’s Melwood training ground before Liverpool confirm the deal during the course of this week, with Manquillo set to become Brendan Rodgers’ seventh significant summer signing.
Manquillo rose through the youth academy at the Vicente Calderon but featured only ten times for Diego Simeone’s title-winning side last season, with experienced Spaniard Juanfran one of the key parts of the Atletico side who also came within seconds of lifting their first ever Champions League trophy.
Liverpool will be hoping that he is one who has slipped through Simeone’s net, however, and is capable of replacing Johnson in the long term, with the England international’s defensive contribution regularly having been criticised during his time on Merseyside.
