New Red Devils boss Louis Van Gaal is reportedly a big fan of the 25-year-old, who helped Germany to World Cup victory this summer, causing the Dutchman to identify him as one of his top transfer targets for the upcoming season.
The new United boss plans to play a 3-5-2 formation at Old Trafford and wanted Hummels to play a key role in that.
However, the move now appears to be in danger after United failed with their first bis for the player and Dortmund have made it known that they are not looking to sell.
The two clubs were at odds over the player’s valuation, and with United still in the running to land Arsenal’s Thomas Vermaelen a move for the Germany star could be on the rocks.
Van Gaal is desperate for defensive reinforcements following the departures of Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra.
Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp also insisted that the player would be going nowhere this summer.
“What was it today? Mats to Man United? For how much? 20 million?.
“For such sums you can just forget that straight away!”
Klopp also joked: “If that’s not a bullsh*t story, I’ll eat a broomstick!”
