Manchester United are set to return with a mammoth £55m offer for Real Madrid winger Angel di Maria, report the Express, after the player’s prospective move to Paris Saint Germain fell through.
United had previously been linked with a move for the Argentina international this summer, but their interest seemed to have ended when it looked as though French Ligue 1 champions PSG had won the race to capture the former Benfica winger.
PSG were unable to complete the deal, however, which seems to have allowed United back into the reckoning for the signing of one of few genuinely top class players to be on the market this summer.
Real are willing to allow di Maria leave the club having signed Colombian international James Rodriguez from AS Monaco as a replacement, whilst they must also free up one non-EU player slot if they are to follow that up with a deal for Radamel Falcao.
With United’s own mega-deal, for the signing of midfielder Arturo Vidal from Juventus, now in doubt due to question marks over the player’s injury status – di Maria could now become their marquee signing target.
The Argentine impressed for his country at the World Cup and was also key to changing the course of the 2014 Champions League final, which Real won in extra-time against fierce local rivals Atletico.
