Hull City have emerged as shock contenders for the signature of Manchester United and England forward Danny Welbeck, should he grow frustrated with a bit-part role at Old Trafford.

The Daily Mirror believes that Hull manager Steve Bruce is preparing a club-record £14m bid for the striker, who is currently behind captain Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie in the United pecking order.

Bruce is after a replacement for Shane Long, who is on the verge of a surprise £12m move to Southampton, just months after joining the Yorkshire side from West Brom in the January window.

And the Tigers’ chief hopes Van Gaal will make a bold decision and cash in on Welbeck as he re-shapes the Old Trafford giants’ squad with players of his own choosing.

Welbeck wants to keep himself in England manager Roy Hodgson’s plans, with Euro 2016 qualifying getting under way next month. With no European football at United this season, there could be even less game time for a player that will no longer be satisfied with warming the bench.

Bruce signed Welbeck on loan at Sunderland in 2010, and the now 23-year-old enjoyed a productive season, scoring six goals in 28 appearances.
