Manchester United may have switched their focus to an alternative to Real Madrid star Angel Di Maria, but have reportedly failed with a bid to sign Benfica’s Nicolas Gaitan, according to Portuguese source Record.
The Red Devils have been in the market for a top class wide-player for much of the summer, with Di Maria seemingly one of their priority targets until reports earlier today that Louis van Gaal had cooled his interest in the Argentine.
The Dutch tactician could look instead to the Madrid winger’s fellow countryman Gaitan, who has been a highly impressive performer during his time with Benfica, though United will have to make an improved bid after seeing their current offer rejected.
Atletico Madrid and AS Monaco are also thought to be keen on the 26-year-old, but Benfica have made it clear that he will not leave for less than his £36m release clause.
It is not clear what kind of offer United have put in, but they will have to step up their efforts and pay the big money if they want to land a top class attacking midfielder before the end of what has been another difficult transfer window for them.
