Manchester City have asked winger Angel di Maria to delay a decision over a potential move to Manchester United, report the Metro, as they look to consider the Financial Fair Play implications of hijacking their rivals’ bid for the Real Madrid star.

United had looked set to complete a British record £63.9 move for the Argentina international, but City’s late intervention could throw a spanner in the works for Louis van Gaal, following another disappointing display in yesterday’s 1-1 draw with Sunderland.
The report suggests that City are aware that they will have to sell players to fund a potential move for di Maria, likely including striker Alvaro Negredo, but could be willing to do so after being offered di Maria for around £60m last week.
The interest from Eastlands may come as some surprise, with City looking particularly strong in wide areas thanks to the likes of Samir Nasri, David Silva and Jesus Navas, although Manuel Pellegrini will be desperate to add Champions League experience to a squad expected to do much better on the continental stage this time around.
United do, however, remain the favourites to land di Maria after reportedly agreeing a fee with Los Blancos, and will be keen to rush the deal through as quickly as possible.
