Former Manchester United star Ray Wilkins has questioned the transfer fee that the club are set to pay for Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria.
The Red Devils are set to smash the British record transfer fee by paying between £65-75 million for Di Maria, who is set to undergo a medical in Manchester today.
Wilkins fears that his former club are paying too much for Di Maria and have accused the club of becoming desperate.
“At £75million, it seems a lot of money to me,” said Wilkins on Talksport.
“It’s quite sad when one club – and I hate using the word regarding Manchester United – becomes so desperate that the transfer fee will be elevated massively.
“This is one case where, all of a sudden, it goes from £50m on Friday to another half of that. So we’ve gone to £75m for a player that can’t get in the first team at Real Madrid.
“He’s extremely talented, but I’m worried about the money. They have to bring a few more in and it could spiral and spiral”.
Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has said that Di Maria has already said goodbye to his team mates and staff at the current Champions League holders with his transfer to Manchester United expected to be confirmed before the end of Monday.
