Louis van Gaal had been pursuing the 26 year old Argentine for some weeks and the former Benfica man’s Bernabeu fate had pretty much been sealed since Carlo Ancelotti welcomed in James Rodriguez following his World Cup heroics.
As well as footing a stunning £59.7m fee for Di Maria there is the small matter of his huge salary and his signing on fee.
Di Maria will pocket a £4.7m signing on fee which is not far off the going rate and will no doubt help the wide-man settling into life in Manchester.
As far as wage packets go the £190k a week deal isn’t as astronomical as it seems.
Indeed both Robin Van Persie and Wayne Rooney earn more though the total run of the five year deal given to the new signing will amount to a stunning £49.4m.
So this brings the total cost to bring in Angel di Maria to £113.8m, which some may deem as a sign of Man United’s desperation though the club’s owners will perhaps see such an outlay as a necessity as they seek to issue a statement of intent as they seek to erase the memory of last seasons’s nightmare seven place finish.
