Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal could turn to Liverpool’s Joe Allen as his hunt for a defensive midfielder goes on.
The Daily Star are linking the Old Trafford side with a sensational £20m swoop on their Merseyside rivals, with Van Gaal reportedly hoping to convince the Welshman to join his struggling squad.
Star sources claim that the new United boss wants to boost his ailing midfield, and had Allen watched in the Reds 3-1 defeat at champions Manchester City on Monday night.
If Allen were to make the move, he would become the first Anfield player to move to Old Trafford since England international centre back Allenby Chilton 76 years ago.
Allen impressed Van Gaal with an excellent performance in Wales’ last game, a 2-0 defeat by Holland in Amsterdam in June, and with his place in Liverpool’s team far from certain, the United boss believes he can lure the player into making the move.
United have endured a miserable start to their new campaign, taking just one point from their first two league games before a team of fringe players and youngsters were thrashed 4-0 by League 1 MK Dons on Tuesday.
Van Gaal has already signed Real Madrid winger Angel di Maria in a British transfer record deal worth almost £60m, but is now seeking a midfielder partner for fellow new signing Ander Herrera.
The Star understands Van Gaal does not feel Darren Fletcher and Tom Cleverley are the players to take United forward and has asked chief executive Ed Woodward to look at bringing in Allen.
