Toby Alderweireld is desperate to play first team football in his favoured central defensive position.
Newcastle United look set to win the race to sign Atletico Madrid defender Toby Alderweireld, Goal.com understands.
The versatile Belgian defender has been linked with several Premier League clubs this summer, including Arsenal, Tottenham and Southampton. Newcastle’s North East rivals Sunderland have also shown interest throughout the summer.
However, he has decided to move to St James’s Park after being persuaded by former Ajax colleagues Siem De Jong and Vernon Anita, who are both currently at Newcastle.
Alderweireld will move to the North East on an initial loan deal but the Magpies will look to sign the defender if he impresses manager Alan Pardew during his stay.
Atletico Madrid signed Alderweireld last summer but has struggled for game time at the Vicente Calderon, often being named on the bench. When he has started for Atletico, he has often been used in unfavoured positions like full-back.
Alderweireld’s arrival on Tyneside could spell the end of Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa’s time at St James’s Park. The defender has been strongly linked with a move to Roma and will almost certainly leave before the transfer window closes if Alderweireld’s move to the North East is completed.
