Th 24-year-old has struggled for form this season and was played out of position on the wing by Arsene Wenger in the Gunners 2-0 defeat against Dortmund on Tuesday night.
And Ballack, who played in the Premier League between 2006-10, is at a loss to explain what has happened to his countrymen but feels he would have been better off staying with the current Champions League holders and not moving to the Emirates.
“I don’t really know what’s happened over the last year since he moved from Madrid to Arsenal,” said the former Germany midfielder.
“A player like him with his ability should have tried to stay longer at Real Madrid.
“That is my opinion. You could see there was a little bit trouble, a little bit moaning. I think he played well but you need time to adapt at a club.”
Ozil helped Germany win the World Cup in Brazil during the summer but since he’s come back to Arsenal, he’s looked entirely devoid of confidence.
Some believe it is Wenger’s fault for not getting the best out of such a quality player with Gunners legend Ian Wright tweeting: ”Arsene get Ozil in the middle, get the team to play around him! He’s 42 mill worth of player for a reason! Do something with him PLEASE.”
