United have been linked with a move to bring Ronaldo back to Old Trafford, having sold the star to Madrid for a then world record £80million fee in 2009.

Former Madrid president Ramon Calderon further speculation of the player’s chances of making a return to Manchester by claiming that the 29-year-old has grown disillusioned with life in the Spanish capital and is now ready to move on.

Van Gaal admitted his interest in Ronaldo and said: “Yes, but it is always a discussion in the papers and I don’t think the media shall buy Ronaldo.

“When it is possible, like I said with Falcao, players like Ronaldo give a lot to the selection or the team, but I don’t think Real Madrid shall sell him.”
