Florentino Pérez has been President of Real Madrid for 4,000 days over two spells at the club, and has spent €1.15bn on transfer fees alone in that time according to Marca.
The list of players signed during his two spells is astonishing, reading like a Ballon d’Or long-list. Along with current stars Cristiano Ronaldo (€96m), Sergio Ramos (€27m) and Karim Benzema (€35m); there are past heroes like Kaka (€65m), Zidane (€73.5m), Figo (€60m), Beckham (€37.5m) and Brazilian forward Ronaldo (€45m).
During his time as president, the club has won twelve titles, including two Champions Leagues, in no small part thanks to the €28,750 that Perez is spending on transfer fees every day. This lavish spending may soon have to stop however, with Real Madrid reportedly €602m in debt, despite the lucrative sale of their old training ground to the Spanish government several years ago.
The president of one of the main Madrid supporters groups has expressed their worries about the debt, saying “we are concerned the that the club cannot meet commitments and future payments which must be met.”
Given the £107.8m (approximately €137.4m) spent this past summer, the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu outfit are yet to curb their colossal spending as a new Galacticos era seemingly dawns in the Spanish capital.
